5 helpful tips for holiday tech shopping

Black Friday has just whizzed by and quick at the heels to follow was Cyber Monday and honestly though we do need to shop for a new television (and I'd love to get a new camera), we weren't bold enough to rush our purchasing decisions over the weekend, brave the crowds and buy just because the prices were slashed. Hubby and I have kept a few things in mind for our future 'BIG BUYS' and here are 5 tips from our list that may help you with your holiday tech shopping ...
  1. Do your homework: Don't just pick a sales flyer and decide to buy a product just because it falls into your budget. Make sure you research the pros and cons and see if the product really fits all that you want it to do. (Remember you don't have to buy the latest model or a particular brand just because everyone else is buying the same. Buy what suits YOUR need.)
  2. Do a little research: Actually do a lot of research. The one setback with tech gadgets is that the return policies on the same are always very stringent. So even if you find that you have a problem with your product after slowly getting used to it a month later you will be stuck with the same for a good long while! Speak to friends who are 'in the know' and check reviews on sites like CNET (I love this site!)
  3. Get store loyal: If you have narrowed down the store you plan to shop your tech gadgets from, it sometimes helps to get approved for a 'Store Loyalty Credit Card' as it will give you bigger discounts. Stores like Staples even have Staples Rewards Cards that help you accumulate points for rewards and even pull up rebate programs
  4. Patience!: We've also discovered that you should wait for the big holidays or close to the end of the year when Stores are trying to clear out for the latest tech goodies. If you're looking for a gadget that serves your purpose but is not necessarily the latest hip set, then playing the waiting game will be worth your while
  5. Coupons Rule: Sure you may not get a whopper coupon out there but I say every dollar saved, is a big deal. Scout around for coupons and keep your eyes open on sites like the Hot Coupon World and keep your 'Tweet' little eyes on Twitter. Believe me, there's a wealth of 'buckaroo saving' information out there that can save a pretty buck!
The golden rule in all this is not to rush while shopping and to NEVER (with a capital N) make any impulsive tech shopping trips!

And the Gift Goes On (Day 30...Final Day of Giving...Or Is It?)

30-Day Giving Challenge

We're on Day 30 of the 30 Day Giving Challenge, i.e. officially the last day of the Challenge around the Blogosphere (For a recap on my 30 day challenge posts, click here).
My family (Bunny girl in particular) is a little sad that it has "come to an end".

Earlier this afternoon, we stopped by the Salvation Army center to drop off some of our Angel gifts. While there, we bumped into a Corps Officer who was excited to see Bunny girl enthusiastic about the 'Angel' mission. To encourage our little one, she has invited our family to join the Volunteers hand out gifts to the 'Angels' later in the month....what a wonderful experience that will be.

On our drive back, Bunny girl asked if we could continue doing "things like this" for the rest of the month and my heart did a little "Yippee" dance when I heard her and I realized that the past month has blessed and touched our family in a special way.
Our family has unanimously decided that we don't want to bring the Challenge to a close. We're going to keep our hearts open and allow God to direct us to help where and when we can.

We're already excited about our next giving project that involves blessing on those we often tend to take for granted. Our list includes our Fedex Delivery Guy, UPS delivery guy, Postman and our old Apartment Manager.
I remember doing something along these lines for the other Postman last year and I remember his eyes filled up with tears when Bunny girl gave him a small Christmas present and all he could say was "God bless you" over and over again.

As Hubby said, "it is important we keep our hearts sensitive and minds open to give when God puts a need in our path." So true. The challenge may have come to a close but it does not need to end for your family.
I pray that you will continue to GIVE as the Lord leads you to.
Jesus Love within us just has to be passed on....Yes, the Gift must go on!

This is the final (official) day of the 30 Day Giving Challenge but you can start your own personal challenge through the month/year. (For more information on the challenge click on this link to visit the site)

CLOSED: Modesty is Fashionable when it's Mikarose(Christmas Carnival Giveaway #33)

This post is a 'Christmas Carnival' feature...The Carnival of Giveaways (or should I say Christmas prezzies?) on Energizer Bunny's Mommy Reports from November 1- Mid Dec 2010.
For a list of all the live giveaways visit 'The Christmas Carnival Center'

Let me be honest. It's not always easy to find a dress or a top that is modest, fashionable and affordable...all under the same breath. Somehow "Reveal" is the mantra for many designers and sadly in my dictionary it's just not "Cool"!

It's so refreshing to know that there are clothing companies like Mikarose that proudly showcase their collection of modest dresses, tops and skirts without sacrificing on style.

If given a choice I can wear my black trousers with a pretty top to church, formal events or to dinners. I'm always the most comfortable in the same and with Bunny Boo on my hip most times, I just find the overall look put together, classy and convenient. So naturally when asked to pick something to review, my fashion antennae immediately picked out this beautiful Turquoise buttoned down top.

I love the pleated tapers in the front and the slightly puffed up sleeves. What's great about this stretch cotton top is the fabric is thick enough to wear minus an undershirt inside and is comfortable enough to wear even on an incredibly hot, sultry summer day. The color of the top in the photograph honestly does no justice to the rich regal look it actually has.

If you're looking for dresses on a budget, don't forget to check out Mikarose's Clearance section. There are some pretty dresses slashed down in price, making these great buys especially since there will be more than just a handful of events you will have to attend over the following month.
With a Mikarose piece, you can rest assured that you will be able to blend into an everyday event as well as into a corporate party. Afterall, to them....Modesty IS a Fashion Statement!

Buy it:

You can buy a Turquoise Button Down shirt for 34.99 US$.

(All purchases above 25 US$ will be eligible for free shipping till Christmas day)

Win it:

One reader will have the opportunity to
win a 50$ Mikarose gift certificate that may be used towards anything on the site.

Reece's Rainbow....A Ministry of Adoption, Hope and Love (Day 29 of Giving )

30-Day Giving Challenge

Earlier this morning while going through posts on my Reader, I stopped at Love Hope Faith's blog when I saw little Trenton's face on the post. I hadn't heard about Reece's Rainbow earlier so I was curious to read more and what I read moved my heart and I knew I needed to feature this Ministry on Day 29 of the 30 Day Giving Challenge.

Reece's Rainbow
promotes the international adoption of children with Down syndrome. By raising money to offer adoption grants on waiting children, they are able to give adoptive families the extra financial help they need to bring a child with Down syndrome home from a miserable existence in overseas orphanages.

There are various ways you can help. You can
(For more 'Help' inspirations click on this link)

You CAN make a difference in the life of a child yearning for love and a family.

Last 2 days of the 30 Day Giving Challenge. It's still not late to be a part of the same. (For more information on the challenge and to join the same, click on this link to visit the site)

CLOSED: National Geographic Kids Atlas (Super Discount +Christmas Carnival Giveaway #32)

Trust me....this is no ordinary Atlas.
This is National Geographic Kids 'Atlas of My World' .
And if National Geographic has put it's name on it you can expect it to be nothing short of being a winning product!

The Atlas of My World is a 48 paged hardcover Atlas that is personalized on the cover and the introductory few pages, making your child feel extra special each time he/she picks the same up.

You can include a personalized message to the recipient that will remind the child of who gave him/her the same and the occasion on which it was given.

Now this is the bit I love, love, love!...
After your child flips the introductory page, he/she will be thrilled to see the next four pages dedicated completely to him/her. Isn't that awesome?!
(You can even include a photograph of your child on the page!)

Bunny girl's look of utter disbelief that then turned into surprise and then absolute joy was priceless!
We got our Atlas of My World personalized in both Bunny girl and Bunny Boo's names and featured a recent photograph I'd taken of both of them in their toy room.

Thereafter the first Atlas feature highlights a map, photographs and details about the State the child/children live in and then features the rest of the regions from around the world, in the pages that follow.

What makes this stand apart is all the little personalized nuggets you get to add to really make this Atlas bursting with 200 photographs one's very own.

This is a great Christmas/Birthday/"Just Feel Like It" present to get your child/children especially as this may be personalized for one child, multiple children or even a classroom.
Not only is this a one of a kind prezzie but it is one that is educational.
I know ours will be treasured and my only question is how we're going to pass this on to the next generation. Hmmmm....guess this means I'll be making separate ones soon!

HOT Time Sensitive Special Reader's Discount:

High Style Dressing at Low Prices with DownEast Basics (Review Only)

This Holiday season if you're looking to buy clothing that is affordable, chic and something that will last longer than just a few weeks, check out Down East Basic.

DownEast Basics
is a high style, low price fashion retailer that has boutique quality products for a fraction of the price you would pay otherwise.
Do they have a holiday catolog? You betcha!

DownEast Basics 2010 holiday gift guide rings in the official start of the holiday shopping season. The new, 60-plus page catalog offers shoppers style and savings at every turn – everything in the gift guide is under $60. Shoppers can find something for everyone on their list – including themselves – with accessories like the jewelry, totes and scarves featured in the “Silver Belles & Bows” and “All That Glitters” sections. Also find a full new line of dresses and embellished skirts that make any occasion special at the holidays.

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to review the Oh La La Overcoat in Gunmetal on a recent "whole day out in the windy and cold weather" outing we took with Bunny girl and Bunny Boo. So yes, I did have the opportunity to really live out my overcoat thanks to the weather!

Having said that, I have to profess my love for this cotton fleece button front jacket that is washable, comfortable and very elegant looking especially when paired with dark blue jeans and a colorful scarf or a colorful polo necked top.

The overcoat tabs were great as they helped shield Bunny Boo's face from the gusts of cold wind. A great overcoat for all you Mommies who love "baby wearing" as I do!

The gift catalog has more for you to choose from. Here are some Down East Basics' recommendations:
  • Stuffing a stocking or buying for a “Secret Santa” at work? Flip no further than the first two pages of the guide with its “All that Glitters” and “Silver Belles & Bows” sections featuring stylish gifts like the Mini Crystal Bead Earrings ($6.99), Fabric Covered Bead Necklace ($9.99) and Chic & Shimmer Scarf ($9.99). Give these items separately or mix and match them and “wrap” into a tote like the small and formal Single Rose Clutch ($14.99) or everyday Pleat and Pucker Bag ($22.99) for a colleague’s gift or something special for a child’s teacher.
  • Choose something for Mom from DownEast’s collection of stylish, fashion- forward cardigans like the Bon Nuit Cardigan (long sleeve with ruffle front detail - $36.99) or the Box Pleat Cardi (3/4 sleeve button-front cardigan with box pleat neckline detail - $36.99). She’ll wear these year round!
  • Where would any woman be without her girlfriends? If anyone understands style it’s sure to be them! Show appreciation for both style and friendship with the vintage lace Tea Time Skirt ($32.99) or the flowering Bouquet Skirt (wide waistband features appliqué flowers in self fabric on side hip - $36.99). Unsure of an exact size? Give a skirt that will fit like a charm and show you care about design with the Tiny Tiers Skirt (style secret: elastic waistband), which features tiers of tulle ($34.99).
  • Dress little girls up for some fun this holiday with DownEast’s “Very Merry Mini Gift Guide for Girls,” featuring the Winter Wish Dress ($29.99), Pretty Party Dress ($26.99) and Long Sleeve Jane Tee ($8.99) among several other cute pieces for the little ones.
Happy Shopping!

Oh and stay tuned for a DownEast Basics giveaway soon!

Buy it:

You can buy the
Oh La La Overcoat in Gunmetal for 42.99 US$.

CLOSED: HearthSong...A Gift Wonderland! (+Christmas Carnival Giveaway #31)

* Click here to view the name(s) of the winner(s)*

In the year 1983, a company opened it's 'Hearth' (a traditional symbol for the center of the home) to lovingly invite parents and children to enjoy quality and wholesome toys through their 'Song' that reflected the beauties of a family spirit.
HearthSong today, proudly boasts of a 'Gift Wonderland' that is able to cater to a child of any age, with any specific interest and to any parent's budget.

Everyone knows how much my little Book Worm loves books. I'm sure she will ravenously eat up the words once she learns to read but till then she's happy to have Mama and Dada read to her.
To encourage Bunny girl's love for books, we thought we'd get her a canvas book rack to hold her favorite books, perhaps for the week.

We initially thought we go with the pastels

but then decided we'd go for a gender neutral pick with primary colors especially as we hope both the children are able to use the same a few years from now.

I also thought it would be fair to personalize the book rack with the words "Good Reads" (Took a little inspiration from Alton Brown on the Food Network Channel!), this way another little child will be able to enjoy the same once Bunny girl and Bunny Boo grow too old to keep using this happy, colorful and sturdy bookshelf.

Notice our Christmas books have found a new place of honor?

HearthSong also has a host of other products like the Sound, Light and Movement Toys, Jewelry making kits, Active games and even Night time play toys.

You can even choose from an option of 81 Christmas Stocking Stuffers

and throw in a few Christmas decorations for good measure!

If you don't want to spend too much, don't worry because there are gifts that will suit your pocket under the 'Sale' segment....

goodies priced as low as 9.99 US$ as well!

So are you ready to grab your credit card and take a Holly Jolly Christmas walk down into HearthSong's Gift Wonderland?

You can buy a Personalized Book Rack for 69.98 US$.

CLOSED: Protecting Identities...Fellowes P-8C Shredder (+Christmas Carnival Giveaway #30)

* Click here to view the name(s) of the winner(s)*

The Christmas season generally involves a lot of shopping online, in stores, the delivery of personalized store mailers to your home and........theft of identities! My Hubby keeps reminding me to rip up any personal data that arrives to our home that I plan to trash especially since there are goons out there who wouldn't mind digging into trash cans to get any personal information they can to use to their benefit later.
The bottom line is to ensure you do your part of protecting your interests and then just trust God to do the rest.

Thanks to Fellowes P-8C Cross-Cut Shredder you don't have to stand over your dustbin ripping up those labels, cards, envelopes, credit card statements, bank statements into itty bitty pieces.

The Fellowes P-8C Cross-Cut Shredder shreds 8 sheets per pass into 5/32 x 2" crosscut particles (i.e. Security Level 3) at a speed of 14 pages per minute.
(Can you believe that it actually destroys a single sheet of paper into 399 pieces?...Wow!)

What's great about this Shredder is that not only shreds paper but also credit cards, staples and paper clips. (So you don't need to pull out those staples from bank statements. Just throw the whole set in and in a few seconds you have confetti strips)

The Shredder comes with a Patented Safety Lock that disables the Shredder for added safety protection

and includes a 4.75-gallon bin that is covered with an easy lift-off head.

I love that the Fellowes P-8C is compact and does not eat up too much space in our smallish home office area.
It's also easy to use and is definitely worth the investment for the price Target's selling it at.

If your Hubby is like mine, I'm sure he'd be thrilled to find this under the tree on Christmas morning!

You can buy a Fellowes P-8C Cross-Cut Shredder for 59.99 US$.

Giving Thanks....and Sharing from our Bounty. (TSMSS + Day 27 of Giving)

I'm at the computer after spending three beautiful days with the family
(I love the joy that surrounds this season)and ....all that food! ((Whew!))

Thank You Lord, I'm so grateful for it all.

But even amidst the laughter, chow downs and fun, we kept reminding ourselves not to forget those in need....those not as fortunate as us
and now as we're just 3 days away from finishing the the 30 Day Giving Challenge, I want to encourage you to dig into the Bounty the Lord has blessed you with financially and GIVE as if you were giving to the Lord.

Here are a few wonderful GIVING opportunities.

1. Put a Smile on a Child's face this Christmas with TOYS FOR TOTS

The U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program collects new, unwrapped toys from various 'drop off points' and distributes those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in your local community. You can also donate money to help buy toys.

2. Wishes CAN come true through the MAKE A WISH FOUNDATION

The Foundation helps fulfill a special wish of a child with a life threatening medical condition. The wish may be a small as desiring a toy or as special as being able to take a trip to Disney World. Read more about the Mission here and help fulfill a little child's wish with a monetary donation, by volunteering time/talents, frequent flyer miles or by donating things you may have but don't need, that are on the 'Urgent Need' list of the Foundation.

3. Become an ABC Angel for ABANDONED BABIES AND CHILDREN

I can't understand how any parent can do this and it breaks my heart each time I read about an abandoned child. It's even more heart wrenching to read that every day in Kenya, in every 10 minutes a baby is abandoned or orphaned because of violence, poverty or epidemics.
The 'Abandoned Babies and Children' Program is an extension of Feed The Child
that helps these little ones with critical medical care and provide them with a home, food, clothing and lots of love. You can help support this worthy cause with your financial support.

3. Buy an ornament and bless an orphan with ORNAMENTS 4 ORPHANS

Read more about this beautiful initiative on Kingdom First Mom

I pray the Lord may minister to your heart this Christmas season and lead you to help in the areas you can.
DON'T hold back because you think your gift is too small.
Every cent DOES count. That's right! All those tiny drops DO add up to make a mighty ocean.
