Mr Biggs In The City (Book Review)

The Buzz:

Mr. Biggs is a very curious Sasquatch who has huge feet and an even bigger heart. One day, when he climbs to the tippy top of the tallest tree in all of the forest, he spots a city. He has never seen a city before but it looks like so much fun, so he sets off to discover all of the curious adventures the city has to offer.

Come along with Mr. Biggs on his journey as he tries to shred on a skateboard, jam in a rock band, twirl in a ballet tutu and much, much more. Will the giant Mr. Biggs find out he fits in the city…or is he just too big? One thing is for sure…he’ll have tons of fun along the way!

Mr Biggs In The City is a hilarious and heart–warming story for both the young and young–at–heart, with vividly wacky illustrations that will make you laugh out loud with every turn of the page.

E.B. Mommy's Report:

This Mr Biggs adventure begins when the lovable Sasquatch spots the city and ofcourse the grass on the other side does look greener to him. His escapades set off Bunny girl's giggles and she found it most amusing that clumsy ol' Mr Biggs actually tried to pirouette through a ballet session and attempt to be a tough policeman while chomping on a pink frosted doughnut!

This is a book your little one will love to listen to. Make sure you spend time looking at the pictures on each page as they tell their own little, funny stories too!

Buy It:

You can buy Mr Biggs In The City for 16.95 US$

Summer Scholastic Reads (4 Book Reviews)

Summer has rolled around and with that so have a host of Summer Reading Programs. To add some punch to the reading festivities here are 4 new Scholastic picks that you can introduce your child.
I know three out of the four are better suited for a Father's Day but lets celebrate Dads in July too. Dads are the pillars in our family and deserve to be celebrated the whole year through, right?!

Now to the books....

LaRue across America

In this hilarious book, Ike's plans for a peaceful cruise with Mrs. LaRue are thwarted when their neighbor, Mrs. Hibbins, falls suddenly ill from heat stroke. Mrs. LaRue suggests that she and Ike care for her cats while Mrs. Hibbins is in the hospital, inviting them along on the cruise. But cats aren't allowed, and Mrs. LaRue decides to take them all on a week's vacation of road-tripping.

Ike begs and begs for bus fare in his letters to Mrs. Hibbins, but she does not respond. As they drive farther and farther from the coast, his wistful dreams of a cruise fade into desperation over the desert horizon.

I have to admit that I think this book is one of my favorite "funny" books for kids. The humor spun into each page as Ike's desperation builds, is hilarious. Older children and adults may be able to to better appreciate Ike's snarky postcard jots than the younger ones.

A definite must read for a good laugh!

When I Grow Up

"What will I be when I grow up" is a question all of us will hear tumble out, at some point, of our children's mouths. This beautiful book begins with a little boy asking his Daddy the same question and discovering that everything begins small and then slowly grows to become something magnificent.
The fuzzy caterpillar becomes a colorful butterfly, the little sprout becomes a tall tree.... then the little boy realizes that he has finally found the answer to his question!
(You will need to read the book to find out more!)

Daddy's Little Scout

This sweet book tells the story of Little Fox and Daddy as they go on their own little "house hunting" adventure tumbling down hills, counting rabbits and playing in the stream.
The Daddy-Son duo explore the homes of their woodland buddies and finally find the home that's just right for Daddy and his Little Fox.

My Daddy and Me

My Daddy and Me
is a book that shares the love between a father and his child right from the beginning of the book till the end. The bond they share is likened to complementing pairs like peanut butter and jelly, rakes and leaves and the moon and the stars. Truly a love relationship that is special and everlasting!

Buy It:

You can buy
  • LaRue Across America for 16.99 US$
  • When I Grow Up for 16.99 US$
  • Daddy's Little Scout for 10.99 US$ and
  • Daddy and Me for 3.99 US$.

CLOSED: Learning to read with Bob Books (+ Giveaway)

* Click here to view the name(s) of the winner(s)*

Bunny girl loves books and this past year in Preschool made such an impact on her especially as she began to identify sight words and started to piece alphabets together to attempt to read small words. This new achievement made looking through books all the more exciting and that's when another Pre-K Mommy suggested I introduce her to the Bob Books.

The Bob Books were developed by Bobby and John Maslen as a step by step reading program to help build up a child's confidence and ability to read simple books and then gradually move on to more advanced books.

I first introduced Bunny girl to Bob Books Set 1 for Beginning Readers. The set consists of 12 books of 12 pages each, using three letter word combinations.

The first book in the series uses the alphabets M, A, T and S and as the young reader progresses onto the last book in the series, he/she would be able to identify and read various three letter combinations using all the letters in the alphabet except Q.

The look of ecstatic accomplishment on Bunny girl's face the day she read through her first book was priceless. That day she read the same book to her dolls, Bunny Boo, Daddy after he came home from work and me several times through the day!
That boost in confidence encouraged her to work on the other books and now we're excited to attack the Bob Books Set 2 for Advancing Beginners.

This set is similar to Set 1 with 12 books (These are a little longer at 16 pages each) except there is a further progression with the inclusion of four letter words to the mix. The young reader will not find this challenging because the Maslens have done such a great job in gradually building up the child's ability to recognize and read letter combinations through Set 1.

I'm so glad I was introduced to the Bob Books. I highly recommend in investing in all 5 Reader sets as this will be a wonderful summer activity to do with your young Preschooler that will not only be fun (and out of the heat) but also a great skill to equip him/her with before the new Preschool/Kindergarten year begins.

Buy it:

You can buy Set 1 and Set 2 from the Bob Books series on Amazon for 10.19 US$ and 11.55 US$ respectively

CLOSED: Chicken Soup for the Soul : My Cat's Life- 3 winners

* Click here to view the name(s) of the winner(s)*

The Buzz:

From kittenhood through the twilight years, our feline companions continually bring joy, love, and laughter to the lives of their "staff." Chicken Soup for the Soul : My Cat's Life is a collection of 101 new stories that captures the experience of living through the natural life cycle with our cats — from the laugh-out-loud antics of kittens and tear-your-hair-out escapades of teenage cats to the more mature adult years and final stages of life. Stories cover each age and stage with all the fun, frustrations, special bonds and routines involved. The book also holds a special chapter about grieving and recovery when our feline friends leave us.

E.B. Mommy's Report:

We're not cat people but who could say no when a straggly little kitten stands outside your apartment door mewing for helping. I still remember Hubby and Bunny girl running outdoors to scare trespassing neighborhood cats just to protect our tiny "pet" for 5 days. Memories of that week still puts a smile on my heart, thinking of how my loyal canine lovers do have a place for little "puddy tats"!

Chicken Soup for the Soul : My Cat's Life is a treat for anyone who loves cats and even for those who don't....that's the beauty of a Chicken Soup book. There's always a story you can relate to, one you can empathize with, one you can laugh along as you read and even some that will inspire....even if each story is only about cats!

CLOSED: Chicken Soup for the Soul : My Dog's Life- 3 winners

* Click here to view the name(s) of the winner(s)*

The Buzz:

It's a dog's life. Chicken Soup for the Soul : My Dog's Life is a collection of 101 new stories that focuses on all the memorable ages and stages of our lovable canines' lives. Starting in puppyhood and covering a range of middle and senior years to the twilight and end when our dear friends leave us, this book captures the entire experience of living through the natural life cycle with our dogs. All dog lovers will laugh, cry, and recognize themselves and their furry friends in these heartwarming and inspiring stories of puppy antics, teenage rebellion, adapting to an aging dog and, finally, having to say goodbye.

E.B. Mommy's Report:

Our family loves dogs and even though poor Bunny girl is going through a phase where she prefers them at a distance (thanks to an over-enthusiastic, loud puppy that pounced on her), dogs still reserve a special place in our hearts. One of Bunny Boo's first words was "dho" (dog) and when he turns 1 next week, there will be a picture of a dog on that cake for sure!

I guess that's what makes this new Chicken Soup release all the more special, because its about dogs, dogs and only dogs!!
From the moment one sets sight on that round bundle of fur, through those trying times of "potty training" and new tricks, during those special, smooshy wet nose on one's cheek instances and even those painful "time to say goodbye" moments, this book has atleast one author that will narrate it all, as if it were you writing that story for the world to read.

If you can say you have or know a canine that has his/her paw print on your heart, then this book is for you!

* Click here to view the name(s) of the winner(s)*

The Buzz:

Have you ever been the last one picked for a team?

Everyone knows what it’s like to have a bad day. And when Norbert comes home from school, he has had a really bad day. As he and his mother talk through the day's mishaps, she gently imparts The Blessing on him through spoken word, meaningful touch, attachment of high value, portraying a special future, and genuine commitment.

By the end of the book, Norbert knows he is loved, and that even if he wasn’t the first pick for the team, he will always be chosen by his parents . . . and by God.

Click on this link to preview this book.

E.B. Mommy's Report:

There have been those days when Bunny girl has come home with a heavy heart only because a certain little buddy didn't want to play with her in the playground or because she didn't get picked to play with a certain little "clique" in class. (Yes preschool classes DO have mini elite groups too. I know....that shocked me too!)

Feeling the sadness in your child's countenance is enough to pull your cheerful spirits down too but then that's where you remind yourself that as her Mommy you need to encourage her, pep up her spirit and remind her that she is so special not just to your family and the people who know her but also to God.That's why I'd Choose You has found a special place in our library.
Norton reminds me so much of my Bunny girl and I could hear myself in his Mommy. The book is simply but beautifully written. Dr John Trent handles the sensitive issue of a child's hurt emotion with love, care and encouragement and the post story assignment for us parents to write up a "Parental Blessing" to speak over our children is meaningful and special.

Get this book. Your family will be blessed!

I've said this once before but will say it again.... I LOVE Chicken Soup books. The featured stories are inspirational, funny, thought provoking and best of all, quick reads!

The latest release Chicken Soup for the Soul: New Moms is by far one of my favorites now!

The Buzz:

Becoming a mom is the most amazing event. Chicken Soup for the Soul: New Moms will delight new and expectant moms with its heartwarming and humorous stories about raising babies and toddlers. This book is full of 101 stories of joy, love and wonder, by other moms sharing the wonders of early motherhood, from waiting for the baby, to those early weeks and first few years, and everything in between!

E.B. Mommy's Report:

Even though I'm not a "New Mommy", reading things from another mom's perspective (in this case many moms) was a learning experience. It's always so encouraging to read that there is another Mommy who has "been there and done that".

This book has it all...the humor, the tears, the worries, the fears and the encouragement needed to help you through the best journey of your life....Mommy-hood!

Chicken Soup for the Soul : New Moms
will make a fantastic baby shower gift for that New (or even experienced) Mommy you know. I've sending my copy to a very good friend back home, who will be having her first baby any day now and is presently a bundle of nerves. I know this 'light reading' book will make a great companion for those sleepless nights!
