Medela ...the first name that's uttered by a Mom when she has to recommend a quality breastfeeding aid and the first recommended brand by Medical Professionals.
Ollie Larsson's Swiss company has grown leaps and bounds since that day in 1961 when it marketed its first accessory.

I'm a firm propagator of breastfeeding atleast for the first 6 months in a child's life. If a Mommy can breastfeed her child till the child turns a year old, all the better. By God's Grace I had no problems nursing Bunny girl as a child and I'm praying Bunny Boo will follow his sister's footsteps and latch on easily. (and I pray I'm blessed with enough to nourish my infant's nutrient needs)

I never did consistently use a breastpump during Bunny girl's time. I was blessed to work close to home and the management in the organization I worked in was awesome. I was given the permission to go home thrice in a day, during working hours, to nurse my then 4 month old infant. That worked great!

With Bunny Boo, being a Stay at Home mom, I know I really don't need a breastpump but Hubby and I decided we would give Bunny girl the privilege to help feed her brother, under our supervision. (Just so that she'd feel involved and have that special one-on-one bonding time with him)

Thus when we were sent the Medela Swing Electric Breastpump I was obviously thrilled.

The kit includes the following:

* A SoftFit™ breastshield
* A Bottle stand
* Two 5 oz breastmilk bottles, lids & a travel cap

* A wide base slow-flow nipple
* 1 valve
* 3 membranes
* Tubing
*A Neck/shoulder strap
* An AC adapter
*A Battery power option (Note: the kit does not come with the 4 AA batteries required)
* A Carry bag
* An Instruction manual
* A Breastfeeding Information Guide

What's great is the pump itself is compact, light in weight and is small enough to fit into my handbag. It is Medela's smallest, lightest single electric pump.
(That's right 100% electric...no manual labor will be involved!!)

The Medela Swing Electric Breastpump employs a '2 phase expression technology:
  • Phase 1 is the stimulation phase that encourages the flow of milk to begin
  • Phase 2 is the expression phase that facilitates gentle, efficient and more effective expression of milk in a short interval of time.
I have not been able to try out the pump yet but we should be ready to go in about 5 weeks time! Based on the reviews I've read on Buzzillions and Amazon I'm encouraged that this is a great kit for the money you'd be spending on the same.

I suppose the only drawback for many is its a single electric pump. That doesn't really perturb me as I'd basically be pumping to allow Hubby and Bunny girl share in the bonding time during feeds and not really to cut out on the time I spend actually nursing our little bundle.

How can I establish a good supply of breastmilk?
Early breastfeeding is the time when the milk supply is set. Breastfeed frequently to help make lots of milk. Enjoy the time after your baby is born, and rest to regain your energy. Avoid frequent bottles when you and baby are together. Begin offering small bottle feeds when the baby is 3-4 weeks old to help the baby get used to bottles.

Interesting tip I found on the site-
When a baby is incorrectly latched, the baby grasps just the nipple shaft rather than locating the gum compressions on the breast itself. Mothers can identify a shallow, improper latch by removing the baby and checking the shape of the nipple. If the nipple looks creased, or drawn into a point (like a new lipstick), this is a sign that the baby is compressing the nipple shaft.

I learned that some babies bite to reduce the flow of milk if it is too fast for them. Try leaning back while feeding. Putting the baby in more upright feeding position helps manage a fast milk flow. Avoid pressing on the baby’s head. This allows him to let go of the breast if he needs to take a breath.

I found great tips for storing like
It is normal for pumped milk to vary in color, consistency and scent depending on your diet. Stored milk separates into layers. Cream will rise to the top. Gently swirl the warmed bottle to mix the milk layers.
