CLOSED: Select Comfort....for your 'bump' (+ Giveaway)

* Click here to view the name(s) of the winner(s)*

If you have been pregnant any time in your life, you will know how uncomfortable sleeping can get as you progress into your second trimester. I have read that blood circulation is the best for baby and you when you sleep on your left side. I did that with Bunny girl and I do that with Bunny Boo now.

To ensure I sleep comfortably I also sleep with a pillow between my legs, one to cushion my 'bump' and the other behind my back for support....to put it simply I'm a pillow snowman! This helps with the occasional back aches but is NO FUN when the pillow behind my back falls out in the middle of the night. I refuse to get up lest I lose my 'comfort position'. Have you faced a similar predicament Expectant Mommies?

Well just about 2 weeks ago, Select Comfort, a 23 year old bedding retailer from Minneapolis sent me a 'pillow that stays in place' solution......their Sleep Number Maternity Pillow.

The Sleep Number Maternity Pillow is actually two kidney shaped fluffed pillows

that can be attached to each other with the velcro straps on the flaps.

You can adjust the distance of the pillows based on your comfort and then just snuggle in for a comfortable, supported night's sleep.

The Sleep Number Maternity Pillow is 100% cotton with stain resisting Teflon and comes with a 5 year limited warranty.

I love that I'm not minus a pillow behind my back halfway through the night and the soft 'cushiony' feel surround my bump is comforting. (Note: I still do sleep with a pillow between my legs as I somehow feel this gives me additional comfort. )

Buy it:

A Sleep Number Maternity Pillow originally costs 39.99 US$ but till 2/28/2010 you can buy the same online for a discounted price of 27.99 US$.

Win it:

One reader will have the opportunity to win a Sleep Number Maternity Pillow.

Wow... I learned that (taken DIRECTLY from the website): Chronic sleep deprivation may cause weight gain by affecting the way our bodies process and store carbohydrates, and by altering levels of appetite affecting hormones.

People whose sleep was cut short in another study ate more sweet and starchy foods.† "Glucose, a type of sugar, fuels the brain," says Eve Van Cauter, professor of medicine at University of Chicago and a member of the Select Comfort® Sleep Advisory BoardSM, "so when the brain is distressed by lack of sleep, we suspect it craves these simple carbohydrates."

I love this tip because my DH tosses a lot. "Is your partner a restless sleeper? If so, he or she could be keeping you up at night, too. Creating barrier of pillows between you can help minimize the bed movement and sounds created as your partner changes position at night." Great idea!

I learned that "A clinical study at Carnegie Mellon University reported that participants with less than 7 hours of sleep per night were three times more likely to develop a cold that those with 8 hours (or more) of nightly sleep."
I average 7 hrs/night while hubby usually gets 6 hrs/night - maybe that explains why he always has a new cold and surprisingly, I don't catch them from him. :-)

Sleep on your left side.
Nutrients are better directed to the baby, and the kidneys are more efficient, which reduces potential swelling in the hands, feet and ankles. If you're normally a back or stomach sleeper, sleeping on your left side may take time to get used to - you may need to change the firmness of your bed and/or invest in a new pillow.

Snoring. Nearly forty-five percent of adults snore on occasion and about 25 percent snore habitually. It’s a problem that can affect both the snorer, and the partner. It’s more predominant in people who are overweight. Exercise and weight loss can make quite a difference. It’s also exacerbated by alcohol use or relaxants taken near bedtime, so avoidance of these can lead to improvement. Sleeping on one’s back also contributes to the problem. A somewhat softer mattress and a carefully fitted pillow designed to encourage a better sleeping posture have helped many. Actively dealing with allergies, colds and other respiratory problems may also help reduce snoring. There are more invasive remedies including dental appliances that hold open the airways, and various surgeries to correct defects in the affected areas of the collapsed air passage.*

I looked for a tip that could help me out and here is what I found (yes, my husband snores)..."Snoring - If your partner's snoring keeps you up at night, try going to bed first and have your partner come to bed late. This will allow you to fall into deep sleep while your surrounding are quiet."

I learned that Nutrients are better directed to the baby, and the kidneys are more efficient, which reduces potential swelling in the hands, feet and ankles. If you're normally a back or stomach sleeper, sleeping on your left side may take time to get used to - you may need to change the firmness of your bed and/or invest in a new pillow.
