Get a 'Taste' of Reading with Super Why

Bunny girl and I had recently had the opportunity to watch one of her favorite PBS Kids' latest episodes- 'Super Why and the Cookbook.'

Unlike the usual episodes where the 'Reading Buddies' jump into fairy-tales and storybooks, this episode takes them into a Cookbook. Now with a 'mini chef in the making' here at home, there was added interest to watch what happened when Super Why had to figure out how to bake a birthday cake for his baby sister. Mind you this would be no ordinary chocolate or vanilla cake....it had to be something little Joy loved....an applesauce carrot cake!

With a little help from the enthusiastic rhyming chef and ofcourse my little preschooler, Super Why and his friends get the yummiest applesauce carrot cake whipped up for a birthday celebration.

As all Super Why episodes, this one too did not fail to provide Bunny girl with some letter sharpening and reading skills. (It was an added bonus that the theme was 'food' related too!)

*This episode premiered on PBS kids on January 29, 2010 but re-runs will air thereafter. You will need to check your local channel listings to find the same.*

To sign off, here are some PBS thought up 'Super Why' reading adventure tips for your little 'Super Reader'...
  • Pick out a simple and tasty recipe with your budding Super Reader. Ask them to point out all of the letters and words they already know in the ingredients
  • Write a grocery list together, sounding out the words as you go along
  • At the supermarket, have your kids help read the signs so you can find the ingredients you need
  • As you cook, read the recipe out loud every step of the way
  • Before serving your delicious treat, create colorful place cards for each member of the family, assisting your preschooler in writing out the names.
Have fun – and Bon Appetit!

We love Super Why at my house. We watch it before naptime.
