The Itsy Bitsy Spider (A 'Creepy Crawly' Book Review)

I can remember that morning as if it were just yesterday…
I must have been eleven or twelve years old and had just dozed off on the couch for a teensy weensy nap. I thought I was dreaming of a spider making its way slowly up my neck. After a while though, the feathery sensation of a racing spider on my cheek felt too strong to be just a featured star in my morning siesta. Thankfully my hand sprung into action and brushed away the harmless ‘itsy bitsy spider’ before it could put one of its hairy legs onto the sides of my mouth. I can assure you that the scream that followed was nothing short of being blood curdling (shudder)!

In spite of the fact that my creepy crawly experience jumps to mind each time I listen to my preschooler sing the “Itsy Bitsy Spider,” it remains one of my favorite children’s action songs. So I was excited to discover The Itsy Bitsy Spider board book, illustrated by Jeanette Winter.

The way Winters has placed the pictures on each page is smart, and entices parents to rotate the book after each page in order to read the next line from the song thereby creating some lively action.

This book is especially well suited for a baby’s short attention span. Bunny Boo is now eighteen-weeks old and looks at the bold and colorful pages of the book, quiet and enthralled with what he sees, a testament that The Itsy Bitsy Spider deserves to be added to your baby’s book collection.

Remember, every book you get your child is an investment towards a lifetime of reading.
