CLOSED: Resolve to be Ready with NYC's OEM (+ 25$ Target Gift Card + Emergency Pack Giveaway)

The New York City Office of Emergency Management (NYC OEM) is encouraging New Yorkers to Resolve to be Ready this year.

The Buzz:

The OEM is encouraging New Yorkers (and other US residents...you never know!) to prepare themselves for an emergency by taking three steps:

Make a Plan
Get a Kit
Be Informed.

On OEM’s Facebook page you can find more information and even take the first step in making a plan by selecting and sharing your own meeting place using the Get Ready NYC: My Meeting Place Facebook application.

You can also download the Resolve to Be Ready preparation calendar by posting the CSV file on the site and copy/pasting instructions. The calendar contains quarterly, monthly, and weekly reminders useful for everyone to help prepare them for emergencies, large and small, throughout the year.

Even if you don't fall under the "New Yorker" segment, it doesn't hurt to read up on what you need to do to be prepared in the case of an emergency.
It's always better to be prepared and safe, rather than to be sorry later on!

At January 18, 2011 at 4:00 AM , Unknown said...: I opened the app and of course not being in the NY area it said I was out of the area....but I did share it back with you and my daughter and read some of the information on their FB page...way back to NOV 24th where it talks about the occurrence of fires in the home.

We learned to be prepared after my brother and family lost everything they owned and their home in a tornado. We keep a safe in our basement safe area with our necessary papers and a bin for emergency with radio, blankets, flashlight, fire extinguisher, etc....and a 2 plus gallon jug of bottled water. (but now that you mention it, we have been pretty lax and have not checked the batteries for expiration since last year)

One thing I remember my brother saying was to make sure you have SHOES in a safe area, as sometimes things happen at night (as the tornado did for them) and they were not prepared to be able to walk with debris and glass around them. He cut his foot badly.

One thing that I have done for an emergency is prepared a WHAT TO DO LIST and a EVACUATION LIST that are posted by my desk. We live in a high alert for fires in the summer and were actually evacuated last summer. I just followed my list (or my husband or teenagers could do if I wasn't home) and begin packing the car with photos, food, water, etc and then preparing our house. My list begins with priority and goes down from there. It was invaluable when we were evacuated as I stayed calm and knew I wouldn't forget anything.
