The winner's name has been announced on this post.

'Grandloving'...what a beautiful title for a book. I know all of us have a favorite Grandpa and Grandma. My favorite grandparent was my mother's father....He was the best! I called him 'Cocopops'. I still remember him coming home from work, tired and worn out from a hard day's work but chirpy as ever to see his two grand daughters-my sister and self. We always knew we had to dig our hands into his suit pockets to get a chocolate treat that he would have so lovingly picked up, on his way home. I still remember his scent- he always wore Brut and for me, till date, when Hubby sprays on some Brut I immediately think 'Home'!
There are some memories that can never be erased and if you really think back you will see that your Grandpa/Grandma/Both feature in many special moments.
Bunny girl adores her Poopa (Hubby's dad) and her GG (My mother).Even though we are separated by distance, they're remembered with love on a daily basis and prayed for by their little Granddaughter. She is blessed to have such wonderful, caring and protective grandparents. She knows she is their little gem and at times I think she plays on that trump card! As Ogden Nash once said "When Grandparents walk through the door, discipline flies out of the window!"
The bond between a child and a Grandparent is one that needs to be nurtured with time and love. It's never too late to develop this bond and there are many ways to do this. Sue Johnson and Julie Carlson have thought of 200 well picked activities that can be done with a Grandparent and a Grandbaby or a Grandteen! These aren't a bunch of ideas thought up by two people while sitting in a vacation home...No Siree! These are love activities Grandparents around the world have practiced over the years and these are love invested tips to ensure you are 'making a memory with your grandchild'.
Grandloving: 'Making Memories with your Grandchildren' is a rich book filled with advice, tips, games to play with the Grandkiddos, craft ideas, memory makers, mailbox treasures and so much more! This book is a treasure chest of resources any Grandparent would love!
I would say the next time you know of a friend expecting a baby, order this book for the child's Grandparent- it will be a priceless gift and an investment into a lifetime relationship of fun, love and awesome memories!
Grandloving: 'Making Memories with your Grandchildren' is a revised and expanded 4th edition. This book has received the National Parenting Publications Gold Award and has 6 National Parenting awards! (More testimonials)
The book closes with this beautiful quote..
" Grandparenting reminds us how we should measure our place in the world- not by what we own or where we travel, but by how many times we reach for a Grandchild's hand, offering the kind of guidance, support ad unconditional love that can span the years and miles"
...and honestly, that just sums the essence of this book all up!
HAPPY GRANDPARENTS DAY!!

I remember my Mom's Step-Mom loved for us to stay the night at her house during the week, even though she had to take us 30+ minutes to school. We'd have to get up really early, and never had time for breakfast, but she hated us going on an empty stomach, so she used to take us to McDonald's every time. She'd take us to the park where we'd eat, then go to school - always late, but she didn't care, out tummies were now full.

I always remember that my Granny had a red leather wallet that she would take with us shopping. I used to spend Thursdays with her and we always went to Hardees for biscuits and then to the bank and grocery store-she has Alzheimers now :-(.
ReplyDeleteI had great grandparents who were the best cooks ever and loved to tell stories and play games. I want to be that same sort of grandma to my little Princess

My Granny and Aunt Opal would occasionally take to to town to shop at the local Roses. The store was not like the big Wal*Mart stores of today. I remember she bought me Play-Doh. I thought it was so wonderful. :)

This was truly delightful, thank you for sharing. Yesterday, National Grandparents Day, we have launched Grandchild Connection, a service that strengthens the bond between grandparents and grandchildren. Grandchild Connection allows distant grandparents and grandchildren to develop close, meaningful relationships by utilizing today's technology of video conferencing. As part of the "VideoVisit" experience, we coach grandparents in educational and social activities that enhance the bonds they share with their grandchildren, and we provide the tools to achieve that end. We have launched our website today, National Grandparents Day, September 13th, 2009Come visit us @ grandchildconnection dot com
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a kid and my grandpa would come visit, he would always take us to Toys R Us and let us pick one toy! It was so fun, we loved that choice and it took a long time to make a decision.
ReplyDeleteMy grandma used to grow a big garden every year. My sister and i would go out and help her pick the veggies. One year she let us plant/grow some pumpkins. I'm so thankful that she's still around for my boys to get to know.

ReplyDeleteI never was close to any of my grandparents due to the distance that has separated us all through the years, but a few weeks ago, when my dad died, his dad came from Ohio for the funeral and we all enjoyed a wonderful visit, under the circumstances, complete with my daughter dressing up like a dog and chasing Papaw around the room! I will never forget that :)
ReplyDeleteI always remember going to Gaga's house and our special treat was Cheese Balls and Hawaiian Punch! I remember that Nana was the one who took me to the Clinique counter for my first makeover and got my ears pierced!

I remember my Dad taking me and my 7 siblings (yes, we were a BIG family and very well behaved children) to church every Sunday and then to our paternal Grandmother's house. She was a small, frail, gentle and loving woman. I thought she was very pretty and I loved hearing her stories about my Dad as a child. I loved seeing her every Sunday.

My Grandma lived down the street from us growing up. I remember sitting in her lap in a rocking chair and having her sing to me :) We also loved to put together puzzles and she was the first person who taught me how to play cards.

main entry:My special Grandparent memory would be of my moms mother. She worked part time as a cook in the elementary school we went too and just lived 1/4 of mile from there and my mom & dad both worked so after school we 3 sisters would walk to her house where she was already there due to going home after lunch was served at school.During lunch hours she would give us 2nds on deserts (anyone got them who ask) they made the best chocolate novacks. Then as we got to her house after school she sewed also as a seamstress for a living which she taught me to do as I have now done for 33 years and I learned alot about sewing & really enjoy it for my extra income as well.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite memories with my Nana are sewing and baking with her. I am blessed to still have her in great health to continue to learn from and that's a good thing since I haven't quite perfected her rum cake recipe yet.

My favorite grandparent memory is probably my grandmother literally on her death bed getting to hold my youngest daughter who is her namesake. I had my youngest at the end of Oct and she had some complications which prevented us from traveling (at the same time we knew my grandmother did not have much time left as she was already in hospice care.) Finally on Dec 19 we got the all clear from the pediatrician to travel and we made it to my grandmother's bed side Christmas Eve. My grandmother had been pretty much in and out of consciousness for days so we were not expecting much but I was determined for her to meet her newest great-grandchild--especially since she was named after her. To God be the glory, when we arrived my grandmother awoke, stayed awake, talked, and even ate a little for a good part of the evening. We had our own little Christmas miracle. We have several pictures of our baby girl propped up on my grandmother's arm in the hospital bed and those are the first and last pictures we have of them together. That is most likely my most cherished memory of my amazing grandmother.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite grandparents memory has to do with my grandfather. I loved how every fall as a kid, Grandpa would spend all day racking up the biggest pile of leaves, working hard all day, just so me & my cousins could come over an jump in those piles, make a huge mess of them all and the whole time he would just sit back in his lawnchair smiling the whole time and watching us.
