In a day and age where people are not careful about how they manage their finances, we as parents have a moral responsibility to bring up our children with strong foundational values concerning finances. Three Cups is a book that will help you do just that.
Mark St. Germain grasps the young reader in a simple but engaging manner, opening the story with a present received by a little boy on his 5th birthday...one that will change his life forever.
Based on Tony Townsley's story, this book teaches a child "that it is not how much money you have that is important but it's how you use it." This is beautifully explained with the help of 3 cups, each to hold your child's segmented weekly allowance,
- A cup for saving
- A cup for spending and
- A cup for charity.
I love this book and sincerely desire in my heart to introduce Bunny girl (and later Bunny Boo) to the concept of the 3 cups. Bunny girl turns 4 several weeks from now and I think this would be a good time to begin giving her a weekly allowance perhaps for doing little chores (not sure yet) and give her the gift of the '3 cups'.
This is definitely a book that will make a great birthday, Christmas or special occasion present for a child 4 years and above. It's an investment you will not regret.

My son is too young to receive an allowance, but when I was young I had to take out the trash, fold the towels, unload the dishwasher, set the table and I'm sure other assorted jobs.
ReplyDeleteI hope I still count as I do not give them money yet for their chores. They are three and O proabably should. They just like being helpful.

ReplyDeleteOur 6 year old earns allowance for helping his little sister, getting his homework done, and going to bed nice (bedtimes have always been a sticking point in our house). Like Bunny, our youngest just turned 4 and we'd like to start teaching her the value of a dollar. This book sounds awesome!

ReplyDeleteMy granddaughter turned 4 about a month ago. I thought she was too young for an allowance but after reading your review, I will suggest to my daughter that she starts an allowance for the many small chores she does (picks up toys, fold small laundry items, helps set table, etc.) to teach her about 3 cups for saving, spending, and charity. I think that's a wonderful idea! Thanks!

My daughter is only one so she doesn't do chores or get paid but I make her pick up her messes!
ReplyDeleteMy son is also too young to earn an allowance for chores, but I imagine that when he's older, his chores might include taking out the trash, helping with dishes, and helping shovel snow in the winter.

My son is 4 and we haven't started allowances yet. I struggle with that as most of things I would have him do are what make a household run smoothly...picking up, clearing the table, etc. I don't think kids should be paid (my opinion) to do things that you need to just run a household. Hubby and I have started talking about ways he could earn money. He loves to help me with laundry and when we find coins in the washer/dryer he usually gets those.
ReplyDeleteWas excited to find your blog and have bookmarked it to check back often!

My boys are 4 and 6. We give a dollar or two here and there for doing chores such as vacuuming, mopping, or cleaning windows but nothing regular yet. Once they are more routine about helping we will establish an allowance.
ReplyDeleteHelping clear the table and clean the dishes is a big one around here!

My daughters are all teenagers now. But I can remember the 1st chores chart I made consisted of dusting, helping sort laundry, folding laundry, & unloading dishwasher. We emphasized that it was part of being a family & only the extras were given allowances for. Basic picking up & bedrooms were all ready their responsibilities as family members. My nephew just turned 4 & his father does everything for him, even still dress him. Maybe they'll learn something from this book. Thanks for this awesome giveaway!

My son will soon turn 3, so chores for an allowance are not on the radar screen right now. However, I do have teenage daughters and when they were younger (maybe 5 or 6) we did begin chores for allowance... a couple were emptying the garbage in both bathrooms each week, emptying the newspaper basket into the recyclables.

ReplyDeleteMy kids get allowance for doing their chores all week. My 16 yr. old has dishes and trash, my 9 yr. old has silverware and setting the table, my 5 yr. old has sock sorting and napkins and my most helpful 2 yr. old puts everyone's napkin in the hamper and picks his clean unders out of the clean laundry. They also have to have nice rooms and all laundry must be brought done to the laundry room. They have a few more chores in the summer, but they get fun activities in place of allowance for those.

We haven't made it to an allowance stage. But that will be coming in the next six months. He will required chores to do and then extra chores he can do to receive an allowance. The required chores are making the bed, picking up clothes, cleaning room. The extra chores will be helping with dinner dishes, emptying trash and several others.
