The winner for this giveaway has been chosen by Random.org and is announced on this post

Honestly....is it just me or does anyone feel like schools really need to have healthier options for lunch? I know kids love pizzas and chicken nuggets but for a school lunch? A friend's son has a burger one day, a corn dog the next and some more fun food the following days....but where are the veggies and fruits? Ok, with your nuggets you will get a bowl of grapes...but honestly....where's the 'Healthy' in the overall?
Right now I bring Bunny girl home for lunch, after preschool only because I don't want her getting into an unhealthy eating routine at a young age. If I were given a choice , I would bring her home every day of her schooling phase and if she let me...even college! (But how practical would that be?)
Thanks to companies like Warmables, we have a better option....send a hot, healthy meal to school, made straight out of our kitchens!
It really is very simple to use the set and as per Warmables research, if you follow all the steps mentioned below, to a tee, you will have a warm meal stored for upto 6 hours. (I haven't tried storing it for that long yet.)
Let the heating begin !
1) Fill the BPA free plastic food container at least 2/3 with food. (FYI- The container holds a child's size serving of food, i.e. about 1.9 cups. An adult size serving version will be introduced to the market soon. )
2) Heat thoroughly.
3) Heat the cherry pit bag thoroughly, making sure NOT to burn pits. Depending on your microwave this will take 45-90 seconds.
4) Put the plastic container and cotton bag of cherry pits inside the WARMABLES pouch and seal.
5) Put the WARMABLES pouch inside your child’s INSULATED lunch box (make sure it is NOT a regular metal or plastic boxes else the WARMABLES will not be able to consolidate heat and keep the food warm).
Buy it:You can buy your own Warmables set for 27.95$ with free shipping, till September 15, 2009 from the site. (Purchase link) - make the most of this introductory offer! (A portion of all Warmables proceeds is donated to charities and non profit organizations.)
Win it:
One reader will win a Warmables set, complete with the food container, pouch and cherry pit bag.

Fig newtons and raisins go good with a sandwich and much healthier than chips and candy.

For my husband I like to pack with his "main dish" a dessert such as a fruit, yogurt or applesauce and also I make sure he gets some veggies either in the dish or as munchies like carrots and celery. Don't have a kid yet but still ahve to make sure the hubby eats healthy!
ReplyDeleteLet the kids help pack their own lunches--let them choose from your pre-designed healthy menu. You're then teaching them to eat healthy (in a kind of pre-fabbed designed to succeed manner) and they're less likely to complain about the potato chips that are "missing" from their lunch. shreve_mary@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI like to send a buffet style lunch in a laptop lunchable container for my toddler who loves finger foods-raisins, cube cheese, grapes, turkey cubes, pretzel nuggets, etc...

My kids loved string cheese or yogurt with their lunch. They thought they were dessert, they loved them so much. Also, I peeled navel oranges and put the individual sections in a sandwich bag - quick & easy to eat.

My son will only eat cold lunch...I like to low sugar granola bars, applesauce, or apple slices.
ReplyDeleteI'm a follower and subscriber and I love to read your site! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteMy healthy food tip is to pack something they'll actually eat! If I pack a healthy lunch, but they don't like it, then that's just a waste. My kids all love dried fruits, so I give them that instead of fruit snacks. :)
ReplyDeleteYesterday, I had trouble with link, kept saying my address not valid. Yvonne at Warmables was so kind to answer my email & now I'm signed up. :-)

My kiddo is just starting preschool, so I don't have any fabulous tips. My goal is to sneak some healthiness in there. I know i'll put fruit in there every day b/c she'll eat that. I'm worried she'll be the kid refusing to eat. thanks! ruth dot gray at gmail dot com

My healthy food tip for my school kids is to send fresh fruits and veggies cut up in hand-size chunks and a small container of veggie or fruit dip. I love this warmables idea though--very clever!

Wow, I would love this! When I would pack my goddaughter's pre-school snack I would try to make healthy things fun! Carrot sticks with Hummus to dip, etc. Or low fat yogurt with granola. About once a week she would get something special, like cookies.
ReplyDeleteI used to hate eating lunch at school, this is so much better than the traditional thermos. Would love to win!

ReplyDeleteNo sweets or chips in the lunch bag! They WILL eat them first and not be hungry for anything else. I save those for supervised snacks.
ReplyDeleteJennifer, jennem22 at yahoo dot com
Make healthy food fun. celery with nut butter and raisins (ants on a log) you can put cookies but make them oatmeal raisin, there are a lot of healthy vegan cookies and if you do juice always opt for 100% natural and organic if possible. Don't put anything that has ingredients you can't say or don't know what they are. You can make sammies and use cookie cutters in cute shapes to make them fun. The possibilities are endless. Get your kids started on veggies and fruit as early as possible and they will love them. We always started the babies on green veggies first instead of fruit, sure they make the face but then they develop the taste for green veggies early and then eat your veggies is never an issue.
ReplyDeleteI always wished that I could send my own hot meal to school with my daughter and lamented that they didn't have microwaves. I'd rather pay for her to use the microwave than eat their junk.
ReplyDeleteMy tip would be to use an insulated cooler so you don't have to worry about the food spoiling.
I pack a healthy lunch for son, using ice packs and an insulated lunchbox.
ReplyDeletePack plenty of water and fruit and vegs.
ReplyDeleteerma.hurtt@sbcglobal.net
We make bento when we can so there are lots of options and the food is fun so the kids want to eat it.

ReplyDeleteMy kids beg for the fruit snack in their lunch but I think these are basically just candy and won't send them. Instead I send various types of fruit with a dip for them to use. Sometimes, I use cream cheese or yougurt as the dip. Othertimes, i use peanut or cashew butter to dip apples in. If they can dip, they seem to like the food better.

ReplyDeletebefore school, model good snacking and eating behaviour so that when you pack healthy things its second nature
Include easy-to-eat fruit like grapes, blueberries, or a banana with lunches. It's great for vitamins, energy, and flavor.
