"Mr Done, how do you spell ponna? "
"Ponna?" I said confused. "Use it in a sentence"
"You know....like 'once a ponna time'"
Teachers are memory makers. We know that stories, paintings, plaster of paris handprints that children make at school will someday become family treasures....We understand that kids are like wet canvases. We help paint the backgrounds- Phillip Done
Close Encounters of the Third-Grade kind is by far one of the most enjoyable books I have read till date. Each time I pick up the book and get comfy on the couch, Hubby will walk in a few minutes later only to find me giggling my sides apart. To redeem myself from his thoughts of wifey's 'cuckoo-ness' (If there ever were such a word!) I read out the passage that set me off in the first place and then we start the chuckles together. This book truly does that!!
I love books and find that I can entertain myself for hours on end with a single book. But ever since Bunny girl's birth, my frequency of reading books on end has minimised drastically. I've found it hard to sit down with a good book and finish it. I love Close Encounters of the Third Grade Kind as its one of those light reading books. You can pick it up, read several passages, have a good laugh, put down the book, walk away and come back hours later and start from where you stopped without feeling you missed anything important. Its that easy to get back into the flow of the book.
Phillip Done has creatively woven his experiences with a class of Third Graders in a school year with threads of humor and thought. 20 years of teaching wisdom has been concised into 336 pages of great reading. This book is a must read for every teacher (you can learn more than just a thing or two!), for every parent (you always wanted to know what your third grader was upto...with this book you will know!) and for everyone else (We all have been third graders once...going through each page with take you down memory lane to relive the fun moments you had in school.)
The Hachette Book Group always publishes great books and this book rightfully deserves its place in Hachette's treasury!
I definitely recommend this book as a must read.

ReplyDeleteMr Roos has definitely been my most memorable teacher. Every Friday we stopped studying English and listened to Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home companion. I still send my writing through email to him to see what he thinks, and I'm a 26 year old back-to-college full time mommy. So, he's clearly been inspirational! (Also, on the last day of school a boy in the class ran to the window and dove out on a dare, so I think that's why I remember his class so much!)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great giveaway!

Mrs. Timmons was my high school speech and debate coach for all 4 years of high school. She taught M-F and then spent Friday evenings and all day and into the late night Saturday sponsoring us at speech and debate tournaments around the city and even the state. She is the most fabulous teacher I have ever know. She is one of the main reasons I became a teacher also!

My favorite teacher of all time was my 6th grade teacher. I just wish that I remembered her full name. We all called her Ms. B. It's what she wanted so we did. She taught in a way that was so fun that we didn't realized we were learning. I wish there were more teachers out there today that would do that.
ReplyDeleteThis book looks wonderful!

ReplyDeleteI was fortunate to have had many wonderful teachers. My fondest memories are of my 1st grade teacher, Mrs. Turchin. The story of "how do you spell ponna" reminded me of how one day she gently corrected me when she discovered in my Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, I was saying "...and to the republic for Richard Stands" when it was supposed to be "for which it stands". I used to wonder who Richard Stands was. :-)

I have had several teachers take me under their wings. But there are two the come to mind from senior yr, Ms Wallace and Ms. McNeal. Ms. Wallace paid for my senior dues. Ms McNeal gave me one of her daughter's old dresses to wear to prom after I won my tickets to prom in a raffle. It was the nicest things they could have done for me. It meant alot to participate for once and at last. super_alba_star@yahoo.com

ReplyDeleteHmm. Well, I have to say my Latin teacher in HS, Dr. Bond, was just inspirational. I learned a lot from him. He even kept the higher level courses on the schedule even though there weren't any other students except me signed up - something he certainly didn't have to do, they would have had every right to cancel it with only one student signed up.
ReplyDeleteMy most memorable teacher was my first grade teacher because she always made you feel special!

My favorite teacher was in college, Prof. Samons. He taught in the Classics department about Ancient Greece and Rome. He had a way of teaching that made you excited about learning. I think it had a lot to do with the fact that it was so obvious that he really enjoyed his subject matter and it was infectious and in the end so did I.

My favorite teacher I actually had for 2 years. My class was large and so had to split in 1st grade, then melded for 2nd. I had Mrs. Buchanan for both! About a week before school started for 1st grade, I got a phone call from Mrs. B letting me know how excited she was to have me in her classroom. She made learning fun and was such a wonderful person that actually liked teaching and loved us kids! I still stay in contact with her (and I'm 29!!)!

My favorite was my marketing teacher. She was VERY patient because she entered me in a "communications" competition. Now, this is where you basically have to roleplay a situation and respond correctly based on social skills and business skills. Most people would NEVER pick an Autistic person for the competition. Well, she did! She coached me and taught me, and I was so proud to get 2nd place out of 16 people!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite teacher was Mrs Wilder. She was tough but I loved her. She was my English teacher. I think she taught me more than most.
ReplyDeleteI remember my 7th grade music teacher for taking the time to help a hard of hearing child with music..which wasn't easy! I remember my eleventh grade american history teacher for always believing that I could do whatever I put my mind to and expecting me to. And My college philosophy proffessor for pushing me to think and not just be cynical.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite was my high school home economics teacher and FHA advisor because she and I developed a bond when I traveled with her to meetings for FHA. She was like a mother figure to me.
